Since 2012 Drink and Donate-ZH2O through SKAT Foundation has been supporting a training program organised by SHIPO SMART Centre in Njombe, at the Southern Highlands in Tanzania. The aim of the program is to improve the access to water and sanitation in Southern Tanzania through capacitating the local private sector: local artisans are trained, monitored, evaluated and supported so that they can start their business on SMARTechs (Simple, Market-based, Affordable and Repairable Technologies) related to water supply. The entrepreneurs are trained in the production and installation of Rope pumps and in different techniques of manual drilling and hand digging.
After 6 years in operation, the program has achieved successful results: 15 of all the trained groups (enterprises) are still active, involving more than 60 artisans directly supported by the program and more than 27,500 people have benefited from the wells and pumps installed by the trained artisans, including schools and hospitals. Competent and solid groups of drillers and welders are now established in Njombe area. Some of them are even certified!
